Allen and Jess presented their research at the 2018 California Society for Ecological Restoration annual conference in San Diego, CA. Allen presented his master's research on evaluating restoration at Papoose Meadow and Jess presented our research on long and short term restoration at Drakesbad Meadow in Lassen National Park.
Congrats Allen for a successful defense on April 13th and for submitting his thesis (and all the associated paperwork) to the graduate school! Allen will graduate with his Masters in Environmental Science this May, 2018. Next step --> turning that thesis into a manuscript!
The lab will be busy presenting research this spring and summer! Lexi submitted an abstract to present her master's research on Sudden Oak Death at the Society of Conservation GIS conference in July. Allen submitted an abstract to present his master's research on Papoose Meadow restoration and Jess will present our research on evaluating long term restoration success at Drakesbad Meadow at the California Society for Ecological Restoration in May.
Kristen's manuscript "Evaluating restoration methods for riparian willows: seeding and ungulate exclosures", with coauthors Ed Gage and David Cooper, was recently accepted for publication in the journal Ecological Restoration. Look for it in the upcoming March 2018 issue.
Another successful semester of senior projects! Kayla, Sara and Lindsay developed research questions, did field work and statistical analyses (in R!) and presented their results at the final GEOS seminar series of the semester. Kayla collected baseline data on trees and fuel loads prior to a prescribed burn at Big Chico Creek Ecological Reserve. Unfortunately, the burn didn't happen as planned this Fall due to the high fire danger, so Kayla's work lays the foundation for a future senior project student to continue the research. Hannah did an excellent job presenting her proposed Master's research at the Biology Dept seminar series. Congrats Hannah!
Many congrats to Lexi for receiving a GIS creativity award to support her research on predicting Sudden Oak Death potential spread in the northern California foothills, incorporating anthropogenic factors.
Fletcher Alexander (Institute for Sustainable Development at Chico State) and Kristen got a nice write up in the Chico News & Review this past week. The article highlights the new Chico State storyboard, building energy use across campus & incorporation into the Introduction to Environmental Sciences course.
Kristen received a travel award and will be attending the 4th Life Discovery Conference - Doing Science Biology Education Conference. This conference/workshop teaches how to better integrate data into the classroom. She has also been invited to join the LDC-QUBES Faculty Mentoring Network for Fall 2017.
Congrats to Lexi and Jimmy for completing exceptional honors projects this year! Lexi is off to Yale University where she'll be working on her master's in Environmental Science under Dr. Bill Lauenroth. Jimmy will continue his work at the Aquatic Bioassessment Lab at Chico State. In addition, congrats to honorary lab member Dan Hiney for winning the People's choice award for undergraduate/faculty research at the 13th annual College of Natural Sciences Poster Session! An avid fisherman, Dan's senior project research was titled Estimating the Wild Trout Population in the Grass Valley Creek Reservoir. It was a great year for the Applied Ecology lab at Chico State!!
