And last night was the Student Research Competition. Claire presented her research on post-fire woody plant regeneration to a broad audience of faculty judges and students. She was confident and gave a fantastic presentation -- and the judges awarded her 3rd place for her group. As this was research she conducted when she was a freshman, we are so excited to see what comes next! Congrats Claire! |
Haven't made an update in a long time, but yesterday was a fantastic day for the Applied Ecology lab! Lexi submitted a manuscript of her sudden oak death risk modeling to Forest Science. We have been working on converting her thesis to a manuscript for a few months, so it's fantastic to finally get that submitted! Classes are winding down and field work is about to begin! This summer I'll be doing field work in Drakesbad Meadow, Lassen National Park as well as at the ORIDE site at Gerber Reservoir. In addition, I'll be scouting out new field sites in Northern California.
In other news, I have recently joined the Board of Directors for the Northern California Botanists. Excited to be part of this very active group of botanists and plant ecologists! Finally, the lab will have a new addition starting in Fall 2019. Matt Mayer will be joining us - he is finishing up his undergraduate degree in Environmental Biology at Pacific University. His research will be in fire ecology. Excited to have him join the lab! It was a big week! Hannah's poster on Post-fire Vegetation Recovery Trajectory won the People's Choice Award for Graduate/Faculty research at the College of Natural Sciences Poster Session! And on Thursday Hannah presented her preliminary results at the Center for Water and the Environment Student Research Forum. Nice work Hannah!
Hannah just got back from presenting her masters research at the SERCAL conference in Santa Barbara. Her poster was titled Post-fire Plant Trajectory and Fuel Break Restoration. And after a really rainy and cool spring, she and Claire have started the second year of data collection.
Hannah and Lexi presented their master's research at the NorCal Botany symposium at Chico State. Great job Ladies!
It's been an exciting week for the Applied Ecology lab!
Lexi Thornton successfully defended her master's thesis on Monday Dec 3. She gave a fantastic presentation on her geospatial modeling of Sudden Oak Death risk in seven counties in the northern California foothills. Congrats Lexi! In addition, last week Hannah Weinberger was awarded funding through the CSU Chico Honors Program for her masters research! The funding will cover her soils analysis and upcoming spring vegetation resampling. Congrats Hannah!
Dan Hiney (BS Environmental Science-Applied Ecology 2018) worked with Drs. Kristen Kaczynski and Mandy Banet (Biology) to turn his senior project into a manuscript. His research Using citizen science to estimate the Coastal Rainbow Trout population of Grass Creek Valley Reservoir is now published in California Fish and Game Journal. For his research, Dan recruited six fellow anglers to assist in mark-recapture data collection over 13 days in the Fall of 2016. Dan trained these ‘citizen scientists’ in proper fish handling for measurement and fin clipping for marking. Dan’s manuscript discusses the potential for utilizing experienced anglers to assess fisheries populations.
Hiney, D.C., K.M. Kaczynski, and A.I. Banet. Using citizen science to estimate the Coastal Rainbow Trout population of Grass Creek Valley Reservoir. California Fish and Game 104(2): 75-85. Dr. Kaczynski was named an Education Scholar by the Ecological Society of America for her participation in the Fall 2017 Life Discovery-QUBES Faculty Mentoring Network. She published her teaching materials on the QUBESHub.org website.
